Monologue / one-act play
Filippos Tlemon
Play Summary
1 (the man) and 2 (the woman) are in the same space.
2 is trying to create something, but she can’t.
1 is creating.
2 quits trying and starts winning to 1, for her inability.
Initially 1 is not paying much attention to 2, but when she goes into paranoia, he puts aside his creation and gives her full attention.
From a position of absolute interest, 1 prompts 2 to come out of her paranoia.
2 though, gets even more angry with 1 and goes deeper in to her paranoia.
1 remains fixed in his place and follows 2 into her paranoid way of thinking.
2 wishes to create something magnificent.
1 suggests that 2 should write another poem, something 2 has done before in the past.
2 confesses that the small form is tormenting her.
In order to justify her inaction, she tries to discredit the small form, highlighting only the value of the big form.
1 senses that 2 is in a chaotic state and suggests she should go see a therapist.
2 gets even more angry with 1’s proposal and is trapped even more inside her inaction.
In a desperate attempt to free herself, she goes once more into scornful allegations against the small form.
1 suggests to 2 the obvious: to create something in the big form, since the small one is of no value, by the claims of 2.
2 can’t take the solution that 1 has suggested, her anger grows and she attacks him, both physically and verbally.
1 confronts 2’s attack by staying fixed in his position.
Because of 1’s stance, 2 sinks once again into her meaninglessness.
1 sees 2’s withdrawal and goes back to his creation, but without moving from his seat.
2 is unable to create something, she is unable to even ask for help and tries to seize 1’s attention by moving around him, while he creates.
1 understands that 2 is unable to ask for help, so he compels her to talk to him.
2 confesses her true problem: she is tormented by the big form and not the small one. This is because she can’t concentrate her thought on a single thing for a long time. She cannot focus, “her mind drifts, it gets carried away”.
1 encourages 2 to let go of her paranoid excuses and just create whatever she wants.
Then he offers 2 a blank page and a pen, so she can come out of her inaction.
2 though, rejects 1’s absolute interest for her and decides to withdraw (she goes to sleep).
For a moment 1 is surprised but in the end he accepts 2’s departure.
2 leaves.
1 remains fixed in space.
